When it comes to a getaway in Virginia’s Wine Country, the stunning vineyards, breathtaking Blue Ridge Mountains, and charming farmhouse-style cottages are just the beginning of what makes Afton an ideal destination. Whether it’s the scenic landscapes or the peaceful, cozy accommodations, Afton promises something special for every season.

But there are hidden gems in Afton that take your experience to a whole new level. Last fall, our hospitality coordinator, Amanda, found a way to add even more adventure to her visit by combining the serenity of the mountains, a glass of regional wine, and something unexpected: horseback riding!
That’s right, horseback riding!
Neighboring one of our most popular cottages, The Cheval Circle, lies Rebel’s Run, a horse farm owned by Mimi. Rebel’s Run offers vineyard trail horseback riding tours that last anywhere from two to three hours. You can enjoy a public tour with others or book a private experience for your party alone.
On top of the stunning location and experience, Rebel’s Run has one of the best tour guides around—Anna! Anna’s expertise, patience, and genuine love for horses makes her an exceptional riding coach, especially for those who don’t ride horses often! Not only does Anna guide guests on these picturesque rides, but she also offers riding classes for locals and visitors alike. Amanda and her friend Jennifer were looking for something exciting to add to their trip, and a two-hour vineyard trail ride turned out to be the perfect choice.

Although neither Amanda nor Jennifer had ridden horses before, Anna’s patient, sociable nature made them feel right at home. The tour started directly at Rebel’s Run and passed right in front of The Cheval Circle, heading out into the open fields and then winding down through the forest. The trail meandered behind secluded homes, along fence lines, and even across serene streams. “It was charming to watch the horses interact, stop to drink, and respond gently to the nudges of the riders,” Amanda recalls.
The ride led them to Afton Mountain Vineyard, where Anna helped the guests dismount and guided them into the winery for a much-needed break. As they relaxed with a glass of wine, Anna stayed behind with the horses, allowing them to enjoy some quiet time grazing in the field.

Afton Mountain Vineyard offers an exceptional selection of wines and boasts some of the best views in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The winery, recently purchased by new owners, has an inviting atmosphere, and the staff is eager to share the story of their new venture. Amanda and Jennifer couldn’t get enough of the sweeping views while sipping their wine!
After a relaxing hour at the vineyard, Anna guided the two friends back to Rebel’s Run for the conclusion of their ride. Amanda and Jennifer were amazed by the entire experience—what a way to combine nature, wine, and a little adventure!

If you’re ever looking for a way to elevate your visit to the vineyards of Afton, consider booking a horseback ride. It’s a fantastic way to take in the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains and make lasting memories with friends.
