Plan the Perfect 3-Day Nelson County Weekend Getaway (Spring 2025)

2 minute read

If you’re craving a quiet weekend in the mountains, Nelson County is one of Virginia’s best-kept secrets. It’s the kind of place where time slows down — where you breathe deeper, eat better, and catch sunsets you’ll remember for months.

Here’s how we’d spend a long weekend here.

Day 1: Arrive and Unplug

Start by settling in. Whether it’s a tucked-away cabin or a modern farmhouse with mountain views, take a moment to slow down. Drop your bags, step out onto the porch, and just take it all in.

When dinner rolls around, head to The Edge at Wintergreen for scenic views and seasonal dishes. Prefer something more casual? Devils Backbone Basecamp has great beer and relaxed energy.

End your night with a glass of local wine and a view of the stars. No noise. No stress. Just stillness.

Day 2: Hike, Sip, and Explore

Ease into your morning with coffee from Trager Brothers Coffee in Lovingston. Then lace up your boots and head out. Crabtree Falls is a must—Virginia’s tallest cascading waterfall. Spy Rock is another favorite, with a shorter hike and a big summit payoff. And if you’re curious about the Appalachian Trail, Reeds Gap offers a great access point.

In the afternoon, shift into relaxation mode. Veritas Vineyard serves up incredible wine and unbeatable views. Bold Rock Hard Cider is perfect for cider lovers, and Silverback Distillery has some of the best small-batch whiskey around.

Back at your place, you’ve got options. Grill something fresh, grab takeout, or just kick back with leftovers and a porch view.

Day 3: Sleep In and Soak It Up

Let yourself sleep late. Then swing by one of the local farmers markets—Nelson Farmers Market in Nellysford or Lovingston Farmers Market if they’re open. You’ll find fresh produce, local goods, maybe even a few surprises.

When it’s time for brunch, Blue Ridge Pig is a classic stop for BBQ. Or head to Basic Necessities for something a little more tucked away—part French café, part wine shop, all charm.

Wrap up your Nelson County trip with one last deep breath. One more look at the mountains. Then head home a little lighter, and maybe already planning your return.
