Nelson County

3 Types of Alcohol – 1 Beautiful Nelson County

Nelson County has quietly become one of Virginia’s best places to sip something local. We’re talking award-winning wines, small-batch spirits, crisp ciders, and craft beers — all within scenic drives of each other, and most with a mountain view you’ll want to toast to.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxed afternoon with friends or a full weekend tasting tour, here’s your guide to the county’s top alcoholic offerings, all made right here in the Blue Ridge.

🍷 Wineries with a View

Veritas Vineyard & Winery
One of the most iconic wineries in Virginia, Veritas offers a stunning tasting room, seasonal food pairings, and expansive lawn seating. Their Viognier and red blends are local staples — and yes, the sunsets are as good as the wine.

Afton Mountain Vineyards
“Grapes don’t grow in ugly places” — that’s their motto, and it checks out. Nestled against the mountains, this estate winery produces bold reds and crisp whites. Less crowded, highly sip-worthy.

Flying Fox Vineyard
Small, relaxed, and a little quirky. Known for Rhône-style wines and seasonal vermouth tastings (yep, you read that right). This one’s a gem for people who like their wine with a side of charm.

🍺 Beer, Cider, and a Laid-Back Vibe

Devils Backbone Basecamp
Classic mountain brewery energy: picnic tables, live music, hearty food, and reliable beer. Try the Vienna Lager or grab a seasonal flight.

Bold Rock Hard Cider
Located right on the Rockfish River, Bold Rock is perfect for groups and sunny afternoons. Crisp, refreshing, and great for people who “don’t really like beer.” Check out their summer seasonal flavors for something light and fun.

Blue Mountain Brewery
One of the originals in the Virginia beer scene. Their Full Nelson pale ale and A Hopwork Orange are local favorites. Bonus: the food menu here is a win.

🥃 Nelson County’s Distillery Scene

Silverback Distillery
Woman-founded, family-run, and producing some of the most celebrated craft spirits in Virginia. You’ll find whiskey, bourbon, gin, and vodka here — plus a beautiful cocktail tasting bar that makes it easy to try something new.

Lovingston Distillery (formerly Virginia Distillery Co.)
Known for their American single malt whiskey and beautiful tasting room. It’s a quieter experience, perfect for sipping slow and soaking in the view.

Make a Weekend of It

What makes Nelson special isn’t just the drinks — it’s the way everything’s tucked into the landscape. You’re not hopping between industrial tasting rooms. You’re winding through the Blue Ridge, stopping at vineyards on hillsides, breweries by rivers, distilleries in old barns.

And if you need a place to recharge in between, we’ve got that part covered too. Our cabins and cottages are just minutes from the trailheads and the tasting rooms — with porches perfect for a nightcap and mornings made for taking it slow.
